From a Hollywood Basement to a Global Powerhouse: The Story of Amiri

The story of the Amiri fashion house is a masterclass in creative conviction and strategic risk-taking. What started with a 13-year-old in Hollywood augmenting a denim jacket with a Motley Crue t-shirt has evolved into a global brand generating a third of a billion dollars in annual revenue. Mike Amiri’s journey from a law school student to a luxury fashion mogul offers a raw look at the realities of building a brand from the ground up.

Mike Amiri’s creative education didn't come from a prestigious design school, but from the streets of 80s Hollywood and Beverly Hills, where he was immersed in rock and roll, skate culture, and the burgeoning K-pop scene. Before launching his namesake brand, he spent years freelancing and consulting, essentially "learning on other people’s time" while working out of a basement.

In 2014, at the age of 38, Amiri decided to take one final, personal risk. With $30,000 in savings, he and his wife launched a six-item capsule collection consisting of a t-shirt, flannel, hoodie, leather jacket, and two pairs of jeans.

Dictating Your Own Terms: By starting independently, Amiri could control the brand's narrative. He famously used "artificial exclusivity" early on, telling buyers he was exclusive to the store Maxfield to increase demand, even when he wasn't. This allowed him to choose the best partners rather than chasing every sale.

The Sacrifice of Time: Building a brand requires being "irrationally and audaciously" focused. Amiri admits that for the first four years, he missed significant time with his family and children, stating that "people will pay the price of your disappearance".

Amiri’s success stems from his discipline in protecting the brand over chasing trends. Whether it was "throttling the growth" of his explosive MX1 Moto jeans or evolving his silhouette from 80s rock to 90s skate influences, his focus remained on longevity and personal integrity.
